We have been making insightful innovations in school buildings for 58 years. Our constant attention to this field means that we are continually are reading, writing and thinking about education.
With new developments in learning modalities and technology, new concepts in educational architecture have evolved. In response we have created unique educational environments that can be found in several of our recent projects.
- At the Saint Francis School in Morgantown, WV, we addressed the need for a building that supports students from pre-K through 8th Grade. Open, light-filled collaborative spaces flow into cheerful classrooms created with 21st Century teaching technology in mind. Built on the site of a dairy farm, the building invokes the history of the place. Classroom wings look like gambrel-roofed barns, while a silo drops light from above into the library. The preschool is contained in a house-like building with a farmhouse porch to accommodate the very young. The technology-rich environment is evident throughout.
- At Oakland Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, the addition of a state-of-the-art basketball court, the renovation of the entire existing building, and the addition of a classroom/chapel have launched this private girls’ high school into a new era.
- At Mount Lebanon High School, we are just beginning to explore the curriculum and building innovations that will shape graduates for years to come.
CFB continues to apply a single proven design criterion to each and every school it designs: The learning environment must encourage children to be creative, engaged and stimulated in order for the educational process to be fully successful. It is our goal and ultimate responsibility to design such an environment.
