Architecture: Religious

CFB works with clients who have a variety of needs for places of worship.  Having undertaken projects ranging from small-scale renovations and adaptations of existing facilities to major expansions, we understand the unique needs of congregations.  “There are no square-footage standards for contemplative or prayerful spaces; there are no acoustical formulae for hearing other voices.” Creating a place appropriate to religious experiences is thus a most challenging assignment.

We appreciate the strong bonds that bind church members to their communities and places of worship. CFB works with our clients to establish the appropriate level of intervention appropriate to accommodate program and budget.  Often this requires building upon established traditions and reflecting the past in our work while also addressing the needs of contemporary worship and church life.

  • At St. Stephen’s, we designed an open hall adaptable for both contemporary worship services and social activities which has been integral to a very successful growth strategy.
  • An addition at Mt. Lebanon United Presbyterian Church established a multipurpose space to support the congregation’s expanding education program.  The rooftop deck provides a unique space for warm-weather gatherings and worship as well as a play area for preschoolers.
  • An addition at St. Paul Cathedral provides an accessible entrance and support facilities in a structure that blends seamlessly with the existing French Gothic landmark.

Whether the need is a renovation or planning for a new facility, CFB has the experience and the creativity to help realize your congregation’s architectural dreams.
